I have been involved in the chamber of commerce through work.
Tell us about your family and pets?
Wife - Alicia (married 10 years this June); Son - Emmitt 3 months old; 2 dogs - Jax (5 yo) and Finn (2.5 yo)
Why do you choose to be a member of the Minnesota Optometric Association?
I know that without the support and organization of the MOA and AOA, the optometry profession would not be practicing at the level it is today, nor would we be able to continue to progress that scope to our full capacity.
What do you like best about the profession of optometry?
Being able to take the time to get to know my patients and be able to make a significant improvement in the quality of life relatively quickly by improving their vision with glasses or contacts.
Describe your favorite memory from your optometric career.
I had a patient within my first year of practice in Minnesota who suffered from severe dry eye secondary to Sjogren's syndrome. She had been to multiple providers, including a couple of corneal ophthalmologists. Despite multiple treatments, she was in severe pain, could not function to work, and was on the verge of loosing her job. I treated her aggressively to start and then fit her with scleral contact lenses to help maintain her ocular surface. Within a couple months she was a completely different person. She was no longer missing work due to her dry eye, and she was able to keep her job. I still see her every year and every time I see her she tells me how much I changed her life.
What fun fact would you like to share about yourselves that your colleagues may not know about you?
I completed a residency after optometry school in Madison, WI. About 2 months prior to finishing, I broke my back while mountain biking. I have recovered fine and still mountain bike regularly, but my wife has made we swear to keep at least 1 wheel on the ground at all times.
