Free Videos for Teachers

The Minnesota Optometric Association (MOA) and the Family Eye Doctors of this state are very pleased to provide the following videos to all Minnesota schools and classrooms. It is just one of many ways to help stress the importance of vision and learning. All postage and handling is provided by the MOA.

Dr. Tom and His Magic Tree

This is a full animation video, which shows children how good vision habits can help them do better in school and sports. The humor in the film gets the point across clearly but subtly. This film is slightly dated, but is still interesting for younger children. Suitable for grades K-3 (15 minutes in length).

Learning to See

This video explores the sense of sight.  It traces light as it enters the eye and creates the image on the retina, which produces a sensory image that is sent to the brain. The video also illustrates visual cues, which aid in the perception of depth and distance. Suitable for grades 3-6 (15 minutes in length).

A Journey Through Your Eyes

This video combines 3-D animation with live sequences to introduce you to the miracle of vision, the anatomy of the eye and the importance of regular optometric care, in an interesting and easily understood manner. Suitable for grades 5-12 (9 minutes in length).

Seymour Safely

In this animated video Seymour Safely and his faithful robot, Vubot, introduce children to the important concepts of how the eye works, the optometric examination, wearing glasses and simple eye safety rules.  Suitable for grades K-3 (10 minutes in length).

Light Optics

A video from the Walt Disney Health Series, featuring Bill Nye, The Science Guy. It discusses answers to questions such as, When does light change direction?, Does light travel in straight lines?, How does light become bent?. It also includes several experiments involving lenses, mirrors and prisms. Suitable for grades 5-10 (26 minutes in length).

You and Your Eyes

This is a video from the Walt Disney Health Series. It shows how the eyes record images on the brain using the analogy of a camera and film. The video explains basic eye structure, and the protective function of the lids, lashes and tear ducts.  It also discusses basic rules for eye safety and proper eye care. Suitable for grade K-6 (8 minutes in length).

Eyeball

This is a newer video featuring Bill Nye, The Science Guy, and was developed by Disney Educational Productions.  It answers many questions regarding nerve connections, focusing, eye moisture and light. The video includes several visual experiments. Suitable for grades 3-6 (26 minutes in length).
