Update on BluePlus Eyeglass Reimbursement Changes

Thank you to those who have called the Minnesota Optometric Association (MOA) office about the letter sent by BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS) relating to changes in the reimbursement structure for BluePlus. There is some additional clarification from BCBS that we want to pass along to you, particularly relating to the second paragraph of the letter.

In the past, BluePlus has not reimbursed for the dispensing fee. Their payment structure included this in the rate for the frames. This change in payment structure to align with the fee for service rate will change that. You will now be paid a dispensing fee under BluePlus as you have been receiving under the Medical Assistance fee for service plan. This should help offset some of the reduction in the frame reimbursement.

It is clear from the budget discussions at the capitol that the state and health plans are looking everywhere for places to cut. We continue to remind them that they have been cutting on the backs of providers for decades. We must find a different way to deliver these services.
